Higley served as Design-Builder with Hasenstab Architects for MetroHealth’s Behavioral Health Inpatient Hospital in Cleveland Heights. The new hospital includes adult, geriatric, and adolescent units for behavioral health and addiction care with appropriate on-unit treatment and program space. Each of these units includes two group rooms, consult rooms, treatment planning, and quiet rooms. There are also shared commons rooms and a multipurpose room for recreation and interaction between patients.
The new 100-bed Behavioral Health Inpatient Hospital builds upon the health system’s commitment to creating a healthier community through service, teaching, discovery, and teamwork and will help in filling the need for psychiatric health services in surrounding community.
The team focused on enhancing the flexibility of spaces allowing use for multiple specialties within the facility and implementing value-engineering strategies and sustainable design elements that will not sacrifice project vision. The building was designed with universal units to allow for a variety of patient types and diagnoses. The universal design gives staff the ability to work in different units while still understanding the floor layout. Materials, such as vinyl sheet flooring with minimal seams and seamless resinous flooring, were chosen not only for patient and staff safety, but also for durability and ease of maintenance.
