Project Description

Higley served as Construction Manager at Risk for the Horvitz Hall Studio Arts Building. This project houses the entire art department, including classrooms, studios, and administrative offices. The photography department accommodates both film and digital studies and includes a movable Cyclorama System (blue screen backdrop) for filming.  The building incorporates eight separate exhaust systems to ventilate the building with a dust collection system for the wood shops. The art and sculpture studios feature a large amount of natural light conducive to those crafts.

The Graham Gund Gallery includes a large, 6,100 SF gallery, a smaller, secondary gallery, an entry and lower lever lobby for public gatherings, a 136-seat auditorium, classrooms, seminar rooms, offices, and 3,400 SF art storage space. This two-story building features a terra cotta exterior, stone masonry, a glass curtain wall, and a membrane roofing system with a skylight and standing seam roof system.

Project Achievements

  • These are 56th and 57th projects awarded to our firm since 1965.
  • The Graham Gund Gallery received LEED® Silver certification in 2012, and Horvitz Hall received LEED® Silver certification in 2013. Both utilize geothermal heating and cooling.
  • Construction took place within 100 yards of existing, operating facilities.
  • With no lay down areas, we employed a just-in-time delivery approach so that all required building materials for the day’s work were unloaded directly from the trucks to the areas where contractors installed them.
